Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Binding thread: The servant-queen is the living proof that Jesus was not being rhetorical. Whoever humbles himself will be exalted. She called herself the handmaid and received the crown.

Exegetical notes:

• Ezekiel 43:1-7 is the great vision of the return of the glory (kavod) that departed in chapters 10-11. The glory comes from the east - the same direction it left. This is eschatological restoration.
• Matthew 23:1-12 is the opening of the great anti-Pharisee discourse. The specific charges are precise: they say but don't do (v. 3), they impose but don't carry (v. 4), they perform for visibility (vv. 5-7). The positive instruction (vv. 8-12) gives three equal negations pointing to the one teacher/Father/master.
• The Queenship of Mary (Ad Caeli Reginam, 1954): Pius XII established the feast as a theological conclusion to the Assumption. The feast always falls on Aug 22, eight days after Aug 15.

Pastoral turn: The Queenship of Mary and Matthew 23 belong together: the warning against religious status-seeking and the celebration of the servant who received the highest status are the same point. The preacher's task is to name both together and to make the servant-queen's manner concrete for a congregation that includes both those who seek status and those who are tired from serving without recognition.

Entry points: "She called herself the handmaid of the Lord and they crowned her Queen of heaven. That is not irony. That is the promise kept." / "They widen their phylacteries. As for you - different."

Avoid: Using the warning against the Pharisees as a cudgel against anyone specific; Matthew 23 is addressed to the disciples as a warning about what discipleship can become.
