Memorial of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The glory of the Lord returns to the temple and God says: this is my throne, I will dwell here forever. The servant-Queen who bore that glory in her body is crowned today. The greatest among you must be your servant. Whoever humbles himself will be exalted. Let us come to this Mass as servants, and let us honor the servant-Queen whose crown is the proof of what Jesus promised.

Ezekiel sees the glory of the Lord returning from the east, filling the temple with its light, God declaring this his throne and dwelling place forever among the Israelites. Psalm 85 sings what the world looks like when the glory dwells: kindness and truth meet, justice and peace kiss, truth springs from earth, justice looks down from heaven. The Gospel gives Jesus's warning against the scribes' and Pharisees' religion-as-performance, and his inversion: the greatest must be servant; whoever exalts himself will be humbled; whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

Lord Jesus, the glory of your presence fills the temple and declares: this is where my throne is, I will dwell here forever: Lord, have mercy. Christ Jesus, you named the servant as the greatest and called your disciples brothers rather than master-and-students: Christ, have mercy. Lord Jesus, on the feast of Mary the servant-queen who is exalted by your promise, you are the one teacher, the one Father, the one master: Lord, have mercy.

Introduction: God our Father, your glory fills the temple and your throne is among your people. Today we honor the servant who bore your glory and is crowned because she did not seek the crown. We pray that our service would be her kind - given without performance, held without claiming.

1. For the Church - that she would honor the servant-queen's manner: preaching what she practices, bearing what she lays on others, seeking no place of honor that the service has not already given; we pray to the Lord.
2. For those who hold authority over nations - that they would be the servants of those they govern and not the ones who widen their phylacteries in the public square; we pray to the Lord.
3. For those in our community who bear burdens others have laid on them - the quiet servants who hold what is heavy without being seen - that they would be honored as the Queen honors them; we pray to the Lord.
4. For our parish community - that we would build a culture of the servant-greatest, where the ones who serve most quietly are recognized and thanked; we pray to the Lord.
5. For those who are being formed in faith this week - that the servant-queen's example would shape their understanding of what greatness means in the kingdom; we pray to the Lord.
6. For those who have died - especially [name] - that the one who promised exaltation to the humble would receive them into the glory that fills the temple; we pray to the Lord.

Concluding prayer: Father, let your glory fill us as it filled the temple. Let the servant among us be the greatest. And honor the servant-queen whose feast we celebrate - and those who follow her way. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
