Parish Prayers

Monday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

Homily Starter

  • The Lord forbid that I give you my ancestral heritage: Naboth's no is theology, not stubbornness. Preach the ancestral heritage - the faith, the dignity, the trust-held inheritance that is not the bearer's to trade. What is the Naboth-heritage in this parish? What is the Ahab-pressure trying to purchase it?
  • The second mile: The fifth antithesis is about interior freedom, not passive capitulation. Preach the difference between the yielding that loses the heritage and the giving that demonstrates freedom. The second mile is chosen; the turned cheek is chosen; they demonstrate whose you are. Challenge the parish to name one second-mile act this week.
  • The manufactured accusation: Jezebel's method is the method of corrupt power everywhere. Preach the pattern without letting the sermon become a political manifesto - the focus is Naboth's faithfulness, not Jezebel's schemes. What would Naboth's faithfulness look like in this parish?
