"Faithfulness has disappeared; the word itself is banished": Jeremiah's diagnosis is not about ancient Israel. It's about now. The concept of faithfulness - sustained, costly commitment - has been replaced by authenticity and self-expression. Preach faithfulness as a counter-cultural Lenten practice. Not heroic faithfulness. Ordinary faithfulness: showing up, staying, not leaving.
-
The finger of God: Jesus says he drives out demons by the finger of God. Not the arm, not the fist - the finger. The image is precise, minimal, almost casual. God's power over evil doesn't require spectacle. Connect to the sacraments: a drop of water, a whispered absolution, bread and wine. The finger of God is enough.
-
Gather or scatter: There is no neutral option in Jesus' framework. You either gather with him or scatter. This is a strong Lenten challenge for a parish: where are we gathering? Where have we been scattering? What division in the parish needs healing?

Psalm 95 as Lenten prayer: "If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts." This psalm appears in the Liturgy of the Hours every day as the Invitatory. It's the Church's first word each morning. Preach "today" as the operative word. Not yesterday's failures. Not tomorrow's resolutions. Today. This Mass. This hour.
