First Scrutiny context: If your parish celebrates the Scrutiny today, the homily should address both the Elect and the assembly. The Elect are standing at the well. The assembly is the town the woman runs back to. Both need to hear the Gospel.

"Is the Lord in our midst or not?": This is Israel's question at Meribah and the question of every suffering person. The readings answer it: yes. The evidence is the love of God poured into our hearts (Romans), the water from the rock (Exodus), and Jesus sitting at the well waiting (John). The Lord is in our midst. The question is whether we recognize him.

Noon at the well: The woman comes at noon because she's avoiding people. She has arranged her life around shame. Jesus doesn't wait for her to come to the synagogue. He goes to where she already is. This is the Church's mission: go to the wells, don't wait for people to find the front door.
-
She left her jar: The detail about the water jar is the key to the whole story. She came for water and left without it because she found something the jar couldn't hold. What are the water jars your parishioners are carrying - the things they think they need that are actually keeping them from the living water?
-
Shame becomes testimony: "Come see a man who told me everything I have done." The thing she was hiding becomes the thing she proclaims. This is the pattern of conversion: what was shame becomes witness. This is powerful for OCIA candidates, for returning Catholics, for anyone carrying a past they think disqualifies them.
